Freedom’s Herald feels obligated to speak out and provide resources for information on the people and situation in Eastern Turkestan. Renamed ‘Xinjiang’ or ‘New Dominion,’ in the late 19th century by the Manchurian Qing Dynasty, the people of Eastern Turkestan are not a Chinese people, as the historically recent name change implies. Decades-long efforts are underway through Chinese government policies, regulations, and laws to erase the cultural identity of the people of Eastern Turkestan, the Uyghurs.

Radio Free Asia operates under a Congressional mandate to deliver uncensored, domestic news and information to China, Tibet, North Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Burma, among other places in Asia with poor media environments and few, if any, free speech protections. All broadcasts are solely in local languages and dialects, which include Mandarin, Tibetan, Cantonese, Uyghur, Vietnamese, Lao, Khmer, Burmese, and Korean.

The Uyghur Human Rights Project promotes the rights of the Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslim peoples in East Turkistan, referred to by the Chinese government as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, through research-based advocacy. It publishes reports and analysis in English and Chinese to defend Uyghurs’ civil, political, social, cultural, and economic rights according to international human rights standards.
